Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s most thrilling and life-changing experiences. But before you step into the dense jungle and lock eyes with a silverback, there are a few important things every traveler should know.
Here’s what to expect, how to prepare, and tips to make your trek memorable, safe, and responsible.
1. You Need a Permit – Book in Advance
Uganda Wildlife Authority requires every visitor to have a valid gorilla trekking permit, which currently costs $700 for foreign non-residents. Permits are limited and highly sought-after, so booking at least 3 to 6 months in advance is essential, especially in peak seasons (June-August & December-February).

2. Bwindi Has Multiple Trekking Sectors
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into four trekking regions: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga. Each offers a unique trekking experience and different gorilla families. Your trek depends on your permit allocation.
3. It’s Physically Demanding (But Worth It!)
Expect a moderate to strenuous hike, depending on the gorilla group’s location. You’ll walk through thick vegetation, muddy paths, and steep hills for anywhere from 1 to 6 hours. A reasonable level of fitness helps, but porters are available to assist with backpacks and support.
4. You’ll Spend 1 Hour with the Gorillas
Once you find the gorilla family, you are allowed a maximum of 60 minutes with them. It’s a magical hour of quiet observation, photography, and wonder, watching them play, feed, and interact in their natural habitat.
5. Pack Smart: What to Bring
- Waterproof hiking boots with a good grip
- Long-sleeved shirt & long trousers (for protection)
- Rain jacket or poncho (rain can fall anytime)
- Insect repellent & sunscreen
- Gardening gloves (for grabbing branches)
- Reusable water bottle & packed lunch/snacks
- Camera (no flash!)
6. You Need to Follow Trekking Rules
To protect both visitors and gorillas, strict rules apply:
- No trekking if you have a cold or flu
- Keep a distance of at least 7 meters
- Don’t feed or touch the gorillas
- Speak in low tones and avoid sudden movement
- No flash photography
7. You’ll Be with a Ranger Guide
Every trek is led by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers who know the forest and gorilla movements. They’ll guide you safely and educate you about gorilla conservation and forest ecology.
8. You’re Supporting Conservation
Your permit fee contributes directly to gorilla conservation, local communities, and anti-poaching efforts. By visiting Bwindi responsibly, you are playing a key role in protecting one of the world’s most endangered species.
9. Weather Can Be Unpredictable
Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, so expect humid conditions and sudden rain even in the dry season. The misty atmosphere only adds to the mystery, but waterproof gear is a must!
10. It’s an Emotional, Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment
Many travelers describe gorilla trekking as a spiritual, humbling experience. Sharing space with a wild mountain gorilla is a rare privilege that stays with you forever. Come with an open heart and expect to be changed.
